Rasmus Voulund
· Master carpenter

Rasmus Voulund is a Danish master carpenter, known for Dansk Unika Håndværk: uncompromising, high-quality craftsmanship. He works with historic materials. He takes old beams and other old timber, removes the outer surface and uses the beautiful wood hidden underneath.

He has direct access to timber from old buildings all over Denmark, and most of what he makes is one of a kind. Rasmus works closely with Jacob at RICEKNIFE, and the two are close friends. He also builds the wood and glass display cases that RICEKNIFE knives stand in at Danish shops such as Løgismose, Bahne and MENY.

My joy is my urge to create and to combine traditional furniture craftsmanship with historic Danish timber.

The magnets

19 strong
magnets.

Inside the oak sit 19 neodymium magnets of grade N35, each Ø20 × 8 mm. Neodymium is the strongest type of permanent magnet you can buy. The magnets sit in the middle of the wood, spaced so you can use the full length of the knife magnet.

  • Strong for its size. The magnets can sit hidden under 3–4 mm of wood and still hold the knife. The knife only touches the oak, never metal.
  • Keeps its strength. Neodymium is hard to demagnetise, so the magnet does not lose its strength in normal use.
  • Protected by the wood. Neodymium can rust when left unprotected. Here every magnet is sealed inside the oak.

about 285 kJ/m³Small, very strong magnets
Ferrite (ceramic)about 25–35 kJ/m³Low-cost magnets, loudspeakers
AlNiCoabout 40 kJ/m³Instruments, guitar pickups. Loses its strength more easily
Flexible rubber magnetabout 5–12 kJ/m³Fridge magnets, magnetic tape

BHmax is a magnet's energy per volume. The higher the number, the more strength from a magnet of the same size. The figures are typical values for each type.

We make the knife magnet together. Jacob sources the neodymium magnets, and Rasmus cuts the wood and builds the magnets by hand in Denmark.

The wood

Reclaimed oak.
No two alike.

Rasmus builds the knife magnet from different kinds of reclaimed oak, including old floors and old door panels. That is why every knife magnet has its own colour. It can range from light oak to darker, reddish tones.

The wood is treated with raw linseed oil and then with the purest beeswax and mineral oil. This gives the wood a lovely finish and a soft glow. Over time the oak develops a patina and darker spots, which are part of the wood.

On the front is a brass plate with Rasmus' name: Master carpenter Rasmus Voulund, Denmark.

In Rasmus' own words

Unique Danish
craftsmanship.

A knife holder developed and designed by master carpenter Rasmus Voulund in collaboration with RICEKNIFE, with minimalism, clean lines and the reuse of historic materials in mind.

Treated with raw linseed oil and then with the purest beeswax and mineral oil, for a lovely finish and a glow in the wood.

The magnets are long-lasting neodymium magnets sealed inside the wood.

Hang it with the 4 slotted brass screws and wall plugs included.

Note: use only a hand screwdriver for the screws, never a power tool.

What it is for

Your knives
in view.

The knife magnet hangs on the wall and is made to store and show your kitchen knives. In a drawer they are hidden away. On the magnet they become part of the kitchen, and you can see which knife you are reaching for.

Mounting

Screws and wall plugs
included.

In the box are 4 slotted brass screws, 5 × 60 mm, and 4 Fischer wall plugs, 8 × 40 mm.

Always mount the knife magnet level, with the plate on the left and the longer part of the brackets pointing down.

  1. Hold the magnet in placeHold the knife magnet level against the wall and mark through the holes in the brackets with a pencil.
  2. Drill the holesMasonry wall: drill with an 8 mm bit and insert the wall plugs. Wood or plywood wall: wall plugs are not needed. Pre-drill with a 4 mm wood bit.
  3. Screw the magnet on by handUse only a screwdriver, never a power tool. Choose a slotted one that fits the screw head, so the brass screws do not get scratched.
  4. Tighten gentlyNever use more force on a brass screw than you need.

Up to 2 metres.
Made for your kitchen.

The standard version is 40 cm in reclaimed oak, with or without teak. Rasmus also makes knife magnets to order, up to 2 metres long, for example 1 metre with 59 magnets of the same size. He also works in teak, ash, mahogany and other woods. An order typically takes one to two weeks. Rasmus always makes several at a time.

From rare historic timber, Rasmus and Jacob also make a few very special sets with a knife magnet and knives.

Questions about the knife magnet

Before you decide.

What is the knife magnet made of?

Reclaimed oak, including old floors and door panels, and 19 neodymium magnets. The wood is treated with raw linseed oil, beeswax and mineral oil. The plate on the front is brass.

How many magnets are inside?

19 neodymium magnets of grade N35, each Ø20 × 8 mm. They lie in the middle of the wood and are fully covered by 3–4 mm of wood, so the knife only touches the wood.

Why neodymium and not another magnet?

Neodymium is the strongest type of permanent magnet you can buy. An N35 magnet has about 8–10 times as much magnetic energy as a ferrite magnet of the same size. That is why the magnets can sit hidden under 3–4 mm of wood, and they are hard to demagnetise.

How big is it?

The knife magnet is 40 cm long, 13 cm high with brackets and 4.6–5 cm deep. The two brackets measure 13 × 2 × 3 cm and sit 6.5 cm from each end.

Are screws included?

Yes. In the box are 4 slotted brass screws, 5 × 60 mm, and 4 Fischer wall plugs, 8 × 40 mm.

How do I mount it?

Hold the knife magnet level against the wall with the plate on the left and the longer part of the brackets pointing down, and mark through the holes. In a masonry wall, drill with an 8 mm bit and use wall plugs. In a wood or plywood wall, pre-drill with a 4 mm wood bit without wall plugs. Screw it on by hand with a slotted screwdriver, and use no more force on the brass screws than you need.

How do I look after it?

Never hang wet knives on the magnet. Give the wood a new coat of wax now and then, for example every other month, or when the surface feels dry. Over time the oak develops a patina and darker spots.

Which versions are there?

Two versions: oak at €468 and oak and teak at €535. In the teak version the top and bottom are teak from old 1980s school desks, and the middle is oak. Both have 19 neodymium magnets, brass screws and wall plugs.

Do all knife magnets look the same?

No. The oak is reclaimed wood, so the colour varies from light oak to darker, reddish tones. Every knife magnet is a little different.

Can I get it in another length or wood?

Yes. Rasmus makes knife magnets to order up to 2 metres, for example 1 metre with 59 magnets, and in woods such as teak, ash and mahogany. It typically takes one to two weeks. Write to info@riceknife.com or on WhatsApp +45 20 46 46 90.

Who made it?

Danish master carpenter Rasmus Voulund in collaboration with RICEKNIFE. Jacob sources the neodymium magnets, and Rasmus cuts the wood and builds the magnets by hand in Denmark.

Are knives included?

No. Knives are sold separately, for example EX-ANIMO III or the knives from the RAW OAK series.

Can I return the knife magnet?

Yes. You have 100 days to return it, for any reason. If you change your mind, you pay the return postage. If the item is faulty, we pay the return postage. Our return policy does not affect your statutory rights.
