Plated Diamond Sharpening Stone 250/1150

RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone has two sides: #250 for reshaping a blunt edge and #1150 for refining it. RICEKNIFE’s plated stone is the first stone in Jacob Bech’s beginner sharpening sequence and needs no soaking. Secure RICEKNIFE’s plated stone, follow the knife’s existing edge angle and finish on a leather strop.

What is a plated diamond sharpening stone?

A plated diamond sharpening stone is a sharpening stone with a diamond coating on a metal base. RICEKNIFE’s plated stone covers the coarse and medium-fine stages of Jacob Bech’s sharpening system.

  • IRICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone has a diamond coating on a metal base.
  • IIRICEKNIFE’s plated stone is double-sided, with #250 to shape the edge and #1150 to refine it.
  • IIIRICEKNIFE’s plated stone sharpens everything from carbon steel to HAP40 and ZDP189, because diamond is harder than steel.
  • IVAll three RICEKNIFE Dragon Scale sharpening sets include the plated diamond stone 250/1150.

“In 2024, I began testing plated and resin-bonded diamond stones, and that changed the game again. Because diamond is harder than steel, it can sharpen any steel, and it does it fast.”Jacob Bech

How do I use a plated diamond sharpening stone?

Jacob Bech’s beginner route with the RICEKNIFE plated stone is #250, then #1150, followed by a leather strop. Hold the knife’s existing edge angle and use the numbered steps below.

Jacob Bech’s beginner route

  1. Secure the stone. Place RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone in the stone holder with the #250 side up.
  2. Find the angle. Follow the knife’s existing edge angle on the #250 side and keep the same angle through every stroke.
  3. Sharpen on #250. Sharpen on the #250 side of RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond stone with light to moderate pressure.
  4. Check for the burr. Feel for a small burr along the entire edge before you leave the #250 side. A burr is a thin lip of steel on the opposite side of the edge.
  5. Turn to #1150. Turn RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond stone over so that the #1150 side faces up.
  6. Refine on #1150. Refine the scratch pattern and reduce the burr on the #1150 side with lighter pressure, flipping the knife frequently.
  7. Finish on the strop. Strop the edge on the leather strop with strokes away from the edge only.

Adding resin-bonded stones

RICEKNIFE’s resin-bonded diamond stones are the optional stages after the plated stone. See the resin-bonded diamond stone page for the roles of #1000, #3000, #6000 and #12000.

Questions
Does a plated diamond sharpening stone need soaking?

No, RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone needs no soaking. Secure the plated stone, for example in RICEKNIFE’s stone holder, and start on the #250 side. Only RICEKNIFE’s resin-bonded stones are dampened with water.

Can a plated diamond stone sharpen HAP40 and ZDP189?

Yes. Diamond is harder than steel, so RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond stone sharpens any knife steel quickly. RICEKNIFE’s plated stone handles everything from carbon steel without chromium carbides to HAP40 and ZDP189.

Can I sharpen a very blunt knife on the 250 grit side?

Yes, the #250 side of RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond stone brings back a very blunt knife. Use light to moderate pressure and work until a small burr forms along the entire edge.

What does a beginner need besides the plated diamond stone?

Jacob Bech recommends the RICEKNIFE Sharpening Set Beginner if you have never sharpened a knife. The Beginner set adds a stone holder, a leather strop, 1.5 micron stropping compound and an angle guide.

Do I strop the knife after the 1150 grit side?

Yes. In Jacob Bech’s beginner route, the leather strop follows the #1150 side, with strokes away from the edge only. Plain leather or a very small amount of RICEKNIFE’s diamond stropping compound is fine.

How big and heavy is the plated diamond sharpening stone?

RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone measures 200 × 75 × 8 mm and weighs 955 g. For comparison, each RICEKNIFE resin-bonded diamond stone measures 200 × 75 × 21 mm and weighs 640 g.
