- IIIRICEKNIFE’s plated stone sharpens everything from carbon steel to HAP40 and ZDP189, because diamond is harder than steel.

“In 2024, I began testing plated and resin-bonded diamond stones, and that changed the game again. Because diamond is harder than steel, it can sharpen any steel, and it does it fast.”Jacob Bech

What are the 250 and 1150 grit sides of a plated diamond stone for?
The #250 side of RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone shapes the edge of a blunt knife. The #1150 side of RICEKNIFE’s plated stone refines the scratch pattern and reduces the burr.
| Grit | Job in the sequence | Pressure |
|---|---|---|
| #250 plated | Shape the edge until a small burr forms along the entire edge | Light to moderate |
| #1150 plated | Refine the scratch pattern and reduce the burr | Lighter |
| #1000 to #12000 resin-bonded | Optional finer stages | Varies by grit |
How do I use a plated diamond sharpening stone?
Jacob Bech’s beginner route with the RICEKNIFE plated stone is #250, then #1150, followed by a leather strop. Hold the knife’s existing edge angle and use the numbered steps below.
Jacob Bech’s beginner route
- Secure the stone. Place RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond sharpening stone in the stone holder with the #250 side up.
- Find the angle. Follow the knife’s existing edge angle on the #250 side and keep the same angle through every stroke.
- Sharpen on #250. Sharpen on the #250 side of RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond stone with light to moderate pressure.
- Check for the burr. Feel for a small burr along the entire edge before you leave the #250 side. A burr is a thin lip of steel on the opposite side of the edge.
- Turn to #1150. Turn RICEKNIFE’s plated diamond stone over so that the #1150 side faces up.
- Refine on #1150. Refine the scratch pattern and reduce the burr on the #1150 side with lighter pressure, flipping the knife frequently.
- Finish on the strop. Strop the edge on the leather strop with strokes away from the edge only.
Adding resin-bonded stones
RICEKNIFE’s resin-bonded diamond stones are the optional stages after the plated stone. See the resin-bonded diamond stone page for the roles of #1000, #3000, #6000 and #12000.
