Chapter I How Blood & Fire was made

It was never
meant to exist.

Every FORGE blade is hand-forged by Jacob's team of blacksmiths, from families who have forged metal for generations. Blood & Fire began during heat-treatment tests for a different version: a non-hammered, rough-ground blade went into the fire by mistake. What came out could not have been planned.

01

The intent

Jacob set out to make a copper Damascus knife unlike anything else on the market: copper and brass Damascus around a VG10 core.

02

The mistake

During tests on a hammered, forged version, a non-hammered, rough-ground blade ended up in the heat treatment by accident.

03

The fire

The heat brought the VG10 to full hardness. The copper on the surface burned. The brass melted.

04

The balance

The thick, polished blade needed the heaviest wood Jacob had to hand to balance it: African ebony.

In Jacob's words, from his design notes
It was love at first sight. The result was a brutal and beautiful expression that makes every knife completely unique.

The surface Copper and brass Damascus

Burnt copper.
Molten brass.
Changed by fire.

When the copper-and-brass Damascus met extreme heat in the test, the copper on the surface burned and the brass melted. The raw, volcanic look was not drawn or planned. It is what the fire left behind.

In Jacob's words, it makes every knife completely unique, so yours will share this character rather than copy these photos.

Blood & Fire knife edge and profile

The core VG10 steel, 62 HRC

Fire on the outside.
VG10 at the edge.

VG10 is a stainless steel alloyed with carbon, chromium and cobalt. Cobalt helps stabilise hardness during heat treatment; the high chromium content provides corrosion resistance.

The VG10 core is hardened to 62 HRC and forms the cutting edge. The wild surface is the face; the VG10 does the cutting.

The handle African ebony

A heavy blade needs a heavy handle. Jacob chose African ebony to bring it into balance.

The FORGE series

Where control slips,
the forge begins.

Hand-forged by blacksmiths whose families have worked metal for generations. Some blades take shape when heat and metal react in unexpected ways. FORGE is the series built from those moments.

Blood & Fire: questions and answers

Before you decide.

Does the Damascus make it cut better, or is it just for looks?

The cutting is done by the VG10 core, hardened to 62 HRC. The copper and brass Damascus forms the outer layers and gives the knife its face. Choose Blood & Fire because you want that surface, with a VG10 edge underneath doing the cutting.

Is it real Damascus?

Yes. The blade is layered copper and brass Damascus around a VG10 core, hand-forged by Jacob's team of blacksmiths, whose families have forged metal for generations. Its burnt, molten look comes from the heat-treatment accident in which the copper burned and the brass melted.

Will the copper tarnish or go green?

Copper and brass can darken over time. Prolonged contact with moisture or acidic food residues can also cause green corrosion. Wash the knife with warm water and a little soap, and dry it straight after use, especially after cutting citrus or tomatoes or working with vinegar.

Will sharpening wear away the pattern?

Sharpen only the narrow edge bevel and keep the stone clear of the blade faces. Scouring pads or polishing the faces can change the surface, so clean the faces with a soft sponge.

What steel is the edge, and does it chip?

The cutting edge is VG10 steel with carbon, chromium and cobalt, hardened to 62 HRC. It can chip if twisted in a cut or struck against hard materials. Avoid bones, frozen food and glass or stone boards; cut on wood or a soft cutting board.

How do I sharpen it?

On whetstones. Jacob spent five years developing RICEKNIFE's sharpening system; his method is on our knife sharpening page. Jacob also offers private sharpening lessons; call or WhatsApp him to ask.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No. Hand wash it with warm water and a little soap, then dry it straight away.

Will my knife look exactly like the photos?

No. In Jacob's words, the heat-treatment accident makes every knife completely unique. Yours will share the character shown here, not the exact pattern.

How big and heavy is it?

The blade is 235 mm, the handle 135 mm and the knife 370 mm overall. It weighs 293 g. The thick blade is balanced by an African ebony handle.

Why does it cost more than copper Damascus knives on marketplaces?

Blood & Fire has a VG10 core at 62 HRC, copper and brass Damascus hand-forged by Jacob's team of blacksmiths, and an African ebony handle chosen to balance the thick blade. Its design began with a heat-treatment accident. The founders answer every enquiry, and you have 100 days to return it for any reason; if you change your mind, you pay the return postage. Compare the materials, construction and support when considering a lower-priced knife.

What shipping options are there?

RICEKNIFE offers DDP and DAP shipping. With DDP, RICEKNIFE is responsible for import clearance and pays the import duties and taxes. With DAP, you are responsible for import clearance and any import duties and taxes. Ask Jacob which option suits your country.

What if it is not right for me?

You can return it within 100 days for any reason; on a change of mind you pay the return postage. Read the returns policy. Questions before buying? Call or WhatsApp Jacob on +45 20 46 46 90; the founders read every enquiry themselves.
