Four woods, under the same moon
YIN, QING, YUAN and QUE take their names from 陰晴圓缺 in Su Shi’s poem Shuidiao Getou. The poem places parting and reunion beside the moon’s changing appearance, and closes with a wish that people separated by distance may share its light.
Each fork carries its own name and wood. Lay them out as you please, or set each one beside an ECLIPSES III knife in the same wood. Natural colour and grain give every handle its own expression.

蘇軾《水調歌頭》 · Our rendering人有悲歡離合,We know sorrow and joy, parting and reunion.
月有陰晴圓缺,The moon is clouded or clear, full or waning.
此事古難全。Perfection has always been hard to find.
但願人長久,May we live long,
千里共嬋娟。and share the moon’s beauty, though far apart.
YIN
Bocote
The clouded moon. Bocote has a golden tone and pronounced grain.
QING
European Boxwood
The clear moon. European Boxwood adds a lighter tone, in keeping with clarity and harmony.
YUAN
Cocobolo
The full moon. Cocobolo brings warm, reddish-brown tones to the handle.
QUE
Ebony
The waning moon. Dark Ebony gives the set its strongest contrast, with a name that connects endings and new beginnings.

“I believed I could have it ready in a few months. I was very wrong.”
A fork with its own shape
Jacob Bech began developing the matching fork after creating the ECLIPSES steak knife. He wanted it to be elegant, functional and original, with a shape that belonged beside the knife.
The ECLIPSES Damascus fork took four years to develop. Jacob spent almost three years and at least seven design iterations finding its shape. Once he had the curve he wanted, another year went into making the bending process consistent.
A fork has to pierce and hold food at a different angle from a knife. The curved head and long, thin tines were shaped for that job. The body, guard and pommel are thicker to give the fork weight in the hand without losing its slender outline.
67-layer Damascus with a VG10 core
Each fork is made from 67-layer Damascus steel with a VG10 core, and RICEKNIFE specifies 62 ± 2 HRC. The layered steel gives every fork a visible pattern that links it to the ECLIPSES III knives.
Jacob chose the hard VG10 core with a particular aim: long, thin tines that would hold their shape while piercing food, especially steak.
Waxed and polished by hand
The four handle woods were chosen for their density as well as their appearance. Each gives the same fork design a different character.
Each wooden handle is waxed and polished by hand with organic Danish beeswax blended with food-grade mineral oil. The mineral oil soaks into the wood and helps protect it from drying out. The finish brings out the grain and can be renewed over time.
How hard are the handle woods?
The Janka test measures the force needed to press a steel ball halfway into wood. According to The Wood Database, the reference values are 2,010 lbf for Bocote, 2,940 lbf for European Boxwood, 2,960 lbf for Cocobolo and 3,080 lbf for Ebony.
For comparison, yellow poplar and Scots pine each measure 540 lbf, while European beech measures 1,450 lbf. European Boxwood, Cocobolo and Ebony therefore have Janka values more than five times that of yellow poplar.
These are published values for the wood species, not measurements of our finished fork handles.

Pair them with ECLIPSES III knives
These are the same forks as those in the ECLIPSES III eight-piece set, in the same four woods. Choose this set to accompany ECLIPSES III knives, matching each fork to the knife in its wood or mixing them from one place setting to the next.
The matching knives are sold separately as the ECLIPSES III four-knife set. For four complete knife-and-fork place settings in two black gift boxes, see the ECLIPSES III eight-piece set.
A gift for someone who enjoys setting the table
The four forks make a considered gift for someone who already enjoys ECLIPSES knives, or for a host who takes pleasure in laying a table. Each fork has its own wood, name and character, and all four arrive in one black gift box.
The set is also suitable for Christmas, birthdays, Father’s Day and corporate gifts for clients or colleagues. Restaurants and steakhouses can use the four handle woods to distinguish individual place settings.
The four-year development, 67-layer Damascus steel with a VG10 core, four contrasting woods and hand-waxed handles are all part of what this set offers. ECLIPSES is for someone who values those details in the cutlery they set on the table. The forks need washing by hand; if dishwasher convenience matters more, choose cutlery rated for it.

For the curiousAbout the steel: VG10, element by element+
ABOUT THE STEEL
VG10, element by element
The supplier’s mill certificate records the composition of one steel heat. RICEKNIFE identifies the steel from this heat as the material used for the VG10 cores in ECLIPSES knives and forks. The figures do not describe the outer Damascus layers.
For a fork, shape matters most
A fork pierces and holds food rather than cutting it. The figures below describe the fork’s core material; they are not tests of the finished fork.
When choosing a fork, consider its curved head, long, slender tines and feel in the hand. Use the tines for piercing and holding food, not for levering or prying.
A comparison with X50CrMoV15 knife steel
X50CrMoV15 (1.4116) is a conventional stainless knife steel. The table compares the supplied VG10 heat with Lucefin’s published reference ranges for that grade.
| Element | Supplied VG10 heat (%) | X50CrMoV15 reference (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon · C | 1.1 | 0.45–0.55 |
| Chromium · Cr | 14.56 | 14.0–15.0 |
| Molybdenum · Mo | 0.836 | 0.50–0.80 |
| Vanadium · V | 0.254 | 0.10–0.20 |
The clear compositional difference is carbon: this reported heat contains more than the reference range for X50CrMoV15. With suitable heat treatment, higher carbon content can support hardness and wear-resistant carbides. Chromium is in a similar range, so this table does not establish better corrosion resistance.
This compares one reported heat with a grade reference range. Lucefin’s published datasheet lists permitted deviations for product analysis. The small molybdenum and vanadium differences do not establish a performance advantage. An element missing from the reference table is not necessarily absent from the steel.

Supplier mill certificate TGB00091853 · heat 2551785B · 24 September 2025. Values retain the precision printed on the document.
The certificate covers annealed flat bar and records 236 HB; its quenched-and-tempered HRC field is blank. The separately stated 62 ± 2 HRC is RICEKNIFE’s product specification. The certificate does not identify finished ECLIPSES batches or test their performance. No separate benefit is claimed for the reported cobalt or tungsten content.
ECLIPSES steak forks: frequently asked questions
What makes the ECLIPSES fork distinctive?
Jacob Bech spent four years developing it: almost three years and at least seven design iterations on the shape, then another year making the bending process consistent. The curved head and long, thin tines are shaped for piercing food, especially steak, while added thickness in the body, guard and pommel gives the fork weight in the hand.
Are knives included?
No. This set contains four forks only. The matching knives are available as the ECLIPSES III four-knife set, or together with these forks in the ECLIPSES III eight-piece set.
Are all four handles the same wood?
Not as standard. YIN comes with Bocote, QING with European Boxwood, YUAN with Cocobolo and QUE with Ebony. If you would like all four forks in the same wood, write your choice in the order note at checkout. Colour and grain vary naturally from handle to handle.
How large and heavy are the forks?
Each fork is 223 mm long overall, with a 100 mm head section and a 123 mm handle; the head is 28 mm at its widest. Net weights are YIN 70.4 g, QING 70 g, YUAN 71 g and QUE 69.2 g, or 280.6 g for all four. Natural wood means individual pieces can vary slightly.
Do these forks match the ECLIPSES III knives?
Yes. They are the same forks as those in the ECLIPSES III eight-piece set, with the same four woods and names, so each fork can sit beside the knife in its wood.
Can the forks go in the dishwasher?
No. Wash them by hand and dry them straight away. Avoid soaking, and renew the wooden handles with suitable handle-care wax as needed.
